secretariat
Forty years ago, on June 9, 1973, Secretariat, an American Thoroughbred racehorse, became the first U.S. Triple Crown champion in 25 years. He set race records in all three events in the Series—the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes—records that still stand today. He is considered to be one of the greatest Thoroughbreds of all time. In 1999, ESPN ranked Secretariat the 35th best athlete of the 20th century, the highest ranking racehorse on the list. Check out the library’s wealth of materials on horses, horse racing and more in the MORE online catalog or contact the library’s Information and Reference desk at librarian@eauclaire.lib.wi.us.
The Astronaut Wives Club: a True Story (2013) by Lily Koppel (Biography) The Right Stuff meets Mad Men in this account of 1960s-era NASA wives. Behind their glamorous all-American veneer—the bubble hair and pastel shirtwaists, the Life magazine photo shoots, the White House soirees—the women were a plucky bunch who held each other up through good times and bad (many are still friends more than half a century later). A light, tasty summer read you'll guzzle down like a milk shake. This book may be found in the online catalog.
The Execution of Noa P. Singleton (2013) by Elizabeth L. Silver (Suspense Fiction) Visited by a high-powered attorney who has initiated a clemency petition on her behalf and who is also the mother of her victim, a death-row inmate is slowly persuaded to share the events surrounding the murder in spite of her reluctance to reveal the whole story or have her life extended. This book may be found in the online catalog.
The Silver Star (2013) by Jeannette Walls (Fiction) A page-turner built for hammock or beach reading. Two motherless sisters are shuttled to Virginia, where their uncle lives in the decaying mansion that's been in their family for generations. When school starts in the fall, one easily adjusts and makes friends and the other becomes increasingly withdrawn. Then something happens to one sister and the other is left to challenge the injustice of the adult world. This book may be found in the online catalog.
No Way Out But One (2012) (Domestic Violence) Advocacy journalism at its very best, this is the controversial documentary about Holly Collins, the first American to be granted asylum by the Dutch Government as a result of domestic violence. A Minnesota court granted full custody of her children to her and her children's abuser. In 1994, she became an international fugitive when she ignored the court's ruling, grabbed her three children and went on the run from her abusive ex-husband. This DVD is in the online catalog.
Hipsters (2013) (Musical Romance (Russian) While the Cold War heats up on the world stage, rebellious youth in 1955 Moscow wage a cultural battle against dismal Soviet conformity, donning brightly colored black-market clothing, adopting American nicknames and reveling in forbidden jazz. This DVD is in the online catalog.
Method to the Madness of Jerry Lewis (2013) (Biography) A contemporary look at a true entertainment legend through in-depth and candid interviews with Jerry Lewis, never-before-seen film footage and commentary from an impressive array of comics and movie stars. This DVD is in the online catalog.
